If you think your manuscript qualifies for Twisted Endings, please follow these simple guidelines. And remember to end it in such a way that the reader will say, “Wow, I didn’t see that coming.” Also, when it comes to endings, they don’t always have to be negative. I wouldn’t mind seeing some happy endings, too!
Now for the guidelines: Stories

  • Length: 1-4 pages, single spaced, 1.5 margins.
  • Now accepting 1st person pov if told from the perspective of an inanimate object or animal (boat, flower, pier, caterpillar).
  • When and where should you add the twist? It could be in the last few paragraphs, the last section, or even the last line. It depends on the story. For my eyes only–If you are attaching a document, type the surprise ending in bold or italics. If you are submitting it inline in an email, add the phrase ‘SURPRISE ENDING’ before it.
  • Please include an explanation in a few sentences, or a paragraph, how your twisted ending applies to the submission. What does it mean? See p19 of the following issue for an example (http://issuu.com/moniqueberry/docs/te-march_2014).
  • Provide a 1-3 sentence (50 word max) teaser for your story. Place it before the first paragraph or in the body of the email.
  • Rejected themes: sex, violence, horror, or expletive content.
  • If you can, make the file name to read: TE Submission – [Name] – [Title]. Acceptable file extensions: doc, docx, pdf, or rtf

Poems

  • Length: Up to 30 lines, single spaced, 1.5 margins
  • Now accepting 1st person pov if told from the perspective of an inanimate object or animal (boat, flower, pier, caterpillar).
  • The unexpected ending is within the last few stanzas or lines.
  • For my eyes only–If you are submitting a document, type the surprise ending in bold or italics. If you are submitting it via email, indicated the surprise by adding the phrase ‘SURPRISE ENDING’ before it.
  • Please explain in a few sentences, or a paragraph, how your twisted ending applies to the submission. What does it mean?
  • Send up to three poems.
  • Make the file name to read: TE Submission – [Name] – [Title]. Acceptable file extensions: .doc, .docx, pdf, rtf

Plays or Screenplays

  • Send the last few pages of the script–perhaps the last scene or act–and add an italicized summary or synopsis to the beginning of the submission. For example, a 10 page play or script is too long, but the last few pages are acceptable.
  • Use standard formatting styles for dialogue, etc.
  • For my eyes only–If you are submitting a document, type the surprise ending in bold or italics. If you are submitting it via email, indicated the surprise by adding the phrase ‘SURPRISE ENDING’ before it.

Comics

  • Will accept a short comic (preferably color, but b&w if good quality). Not certain of page limit. Just send what you have.
  • Acceptable file extensions: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .jpg, .png.
  • For my eyes only–If you are submitting a document, type the surprise ending in bold or italics. If you are submitting it via email, indicated the surprise by adding the phrase ‘SURPRISE ENDING’ before it.
